How to Read an MT5 Strategy Tester Report
A profitable MT5 report is not automatically a tradable EA. You need to read the report like an engineer: data quality first, then sample size, then drawdown, then profit factor, then live-execution risk.
1. Profit Factor
Profit factor is gross profit divided by gross loss. A PF below 1.2 is thin. A PF above 4 can be suspicious unless there are many trades, full costs, and out-of-sample proof. A stable 1.4 over hundreds of trades is often more believable than a perfect 8.0 on 35 trades.
2. Equity Drawdown
Equity drawdown matters more than balance drawdown because open floating loss kills accounts before closed trades appear in history. Grid and recovery EAs often hide their real risk in floating drawdown.
3. Recovery Factor
Recovery factor compares net profit to maximum drawdown. If the EA earns little relative to its drawdown, the strategy may be fragile even if it is profitable.
4. Expected Payoff
Expected payoff is average profit per trade. If it is tiny, spread, slippage and commission can destroy live performance.
5. Total Trades
Small samples lie. A scalping EA should usually have hundreds or thousands of trades across regimes. A swing EA can have fewer trades, but then the test must span years and include forward validation.
MT5 Report Red Flags
- Fixed spread or unknown spread.
- No slippage stress.
- One optimized preset only.
- Very high profit factor with few trades.
- Balance drawdown shown but equity drawdown ignored.
- No out-of-sample or walk-forward test.
- Grid, martingale, recovery baskets, or no hard stop.
