What Does 0.01 Lot Size Mean in Forex?

Short answer: 0.01 is a micro lot — 1,000 units of the base currency (or 1 oz of gold on XAUUSD). It is worth about $0.10 per pip on EURUSD and $0.01 per pip on a 100-oz gold contract. It is the smallest size most retail brokers offer and the correct starting point for beginners and small accounts.

Lot Sizes, From Micro to Standard

Lot typeSizeUnits (EURUSD)Pip value (EURUSD)Pip value (XAUUSD, 100 oz)
Micro (0.01)0.01 lot1,000$0.10$0.01
Mini (0.10)0.10 lot10,000$1.00$0.10
Standard (1.00)1.00 lot100,000$10.00$1.00

Gold pip values assume a 100 oz/lot contract with a 0.01 pip size ($1.00 per 1.00 lot). Some brokers quote gold with different contract sizes — always check the contract spec, then use the Pip Value Calculator.

Why 0.01 Is the Beginner's Size

At 0.01 lots, a 50-pip loss on EURUSD costs $5. On a $500 account that is exactly 1% risk — the guideline number. The same 50-pip loss at 1.00 lot would cost $500 and close the account. Micro lots let you:

  • Trade a real market, real spreads and real psychology with survivable risk (Guideline 6: assume you start in the losing 90%).
  • Take a 50–100 pip stop and still stay inside the 0.5–2% risk rule on accounts under $2,000.
  • Build a 100+ trade journal without risking meaningful money (Guideline 12).

0.01 Lot Sizing by Account Size (EURUSD, 1% Risk)

Account1% risk $Stop 20 pipsStop 50 pipsStop 100 pips
$100$1.000.01 (max 0.05)0.01 (over 2% risk)0.01 (over 2% risk)
$500$5.000.020.010.01 (over 2% risk)
$1,000$10.000.050.020.01
$2,000$20.000.100.040.02
$5,000$50.000.250.100.05

Sizing formula (Guideline 16): lots = risk $ ÷ (stop pips x pip value per lot), rounded down. On a $100 account with a 50-pip stop, 0.01 lots risks $5 = 5% — above the 2% guideline, which means: reduce the stop or the account is too small for that trade.

0.01 on Gold, Indices and JPY Pairs

  • XAUUSD (100 oz/lot): 0.01 lot = 1 oz; pip value $0.01. A $10 risk with a $5.00 gold stop allows 0.02 lots.
  • USDJPY: pip value at 0.01 lot is roughly $0.09 (rate-dependent, ~150 yen). Use the calculator for exact numbers.
  • Indices (US30, NAS100): 0.01 lots are small fraction-of-contract positions; check the contract value per point in your broker's spec.

FAQ

How much money is 0.01 lots in forex?

0.01 lots is 1,000 units of the base currency — about $1,000 notional on EURUSD at 1.10. It is worth $0.10 per pip, so a 50-pip move equals $5.00.

How much does 0.01 lot make per pip?

$0.10 per pip on EURUSD (and most EUR/GBP/AUD majors), about $0.09 on USDJPY, and $0.01 per pip on a 100 oz/lot gold contract.

Can I trade 0.01 lots with $100?

Yes, with tight stops. At 0.01 lots, a 20-pip stop costs $2 = 2% of a $100 account — at the very edge of the 0.5-2% guideline. A 50-pip stop would risk 5%, which breaks the rule; reduce the stop or grow the account first.

What is 0.01 lot in gold?

0.01 lots of XAUUSD = 1 troy ounce of gold. On a 100 oz/lot contract the pip value is $0.01 per 0.01 lot, and the point value ($0.01 price move) is $1.00 per 0.01 lot... check your broker contract spec for exact values.
