Target selection

Fibonacci Pivot Targets for Gold Breakout Trading

A session breakout tells you when price leaves a range. A pivot map tells you where it may go next. BBFP combines both: the box decides the entry, and previous-day pivot levels decide how far the target can reasonably be.

The pivot formula

BBFP uses the previous completed daily candle:

  • Pivot P = (High + Low + Close) / 3
  • R1 = P + 1.0 × (P − Low)
  • S1 = P − 1.0 × (High − P)
  • Intraday Long = P + 0.236 × daily range
  • Intraday Short = P − 0.236 × daily range
  • Long Target 1 = P + 0.618 × daily range
  • Short Target 1 = P − 0.618 × daily range
  • Long Target 2 = P + 1.0 × daily range
  • Short Target 2 = P − 1.0 × daily range

Example: previous-day high 3,960, low 3,930, close 3,950. The pivot is 3,946.67. R1 is 3,963.33 and S1 is 3,924.44.

Pivot as a filter, not a signal

A buy breakout above a session box is weaker if price is still below the daily pivot. BBFP's InpUsePivotBias setting rejects that case. It does not buy simply because price is above the pivot; it still needs the closed box breakout.

This is a two-layer rule: structure first, location second. The session box supplies structure; the pivot supplies context.

Choosing the target

The EA looks for a pivot level above a buy entry, or below a sell entry, that falls inside the minimum and maximum reward-to-risk range. If a valid level exists, it is preferred. If not, the target is based on the box range and then clamped to the RR limits.

SetupEntryStopPossible target
Buy S1 breakoutAbove box highBelow box lowPivot, R1, intraday long or Long Target 1/2
Sell S2 breakoutBelow box lowAbove box highPivot, S1, intraday short or Short Target 1/2

Why RR limits matter

A target that is too close can be hit by noise; a target that is too far may never be reached in the session. BBFP clamps the final target to InpMinRR and InpMaxRR. LOW_DD uses 3R to 5R; HIGH_RISK uses 2R to 8R.

Reward-to-risk is only half of the equation. A 3R target with a 20% hit rate is not automatically better than a 2R target with a 40% hit rate. Always inspect the trade distribution and drawdown.

Practical workflow

  1. Wait for the session box to close.
  2. Wait for a completed M15 close beyond the box plus the buffer.
  3. Check the D1 pivot bias.
  4. Measure the box range and stop distance.
  5. Choose a valid pivot target inside the RR limits.
  6. Size the position from risk, not from the target.

BBFP automates this workflow. See the BBFP Breakout Grid EA page for the compiled EX5 and both set files.
