Session Box Breakout Strategy for XAUUSD M15

A session box turns a block of trading hours into a simple high and low. The strategy waits for a completed candle to close outside that range, then manages the trade with a predefined stop and target.

What is a session box?

A session box is the highest high and lowest low recorded during a fixed time window. BBFP uses two windows in GMT: S1 23:00–06:00 and S2 06:00–13:00. The box is built from M15 candles and becomes tradable after the window closes.

For example, if S1 records a high of 3,950.00 and a low of 3,938.00, the box range is $12.00. A buy setup needs a closed M15 candle above 3,950.00 plus the breakout buffer. A sell setup needs a close below 3,938.00 minus the buffer.

Why use closed candles?

An open candle can trade above the box and then close back inside. That creates false breakout signals. BBFP evaluates the last closed M15 bar, so the breakout has to survive the entire candle. The buffer adds a second condition: a close only a few points above the box is not enough.

On gold, a 2-pip buffer is $0.20 because one pip is 0.10. This is meaningful but not so large that it blocks every normal breakout. HIGH_RISK reduces the buffer to 1.5 pips for more signals.

Filters that improve signal quality

Pivot biasA buy must be above the previous D1 pivot; a sell below it.
Box rangeBoxes that are too small or too wide relative to ATR are skipped.
Time windowThe first breakout must occur within a set number of M15 bars after the box ends.
SpreadEntries are blocked when the broker spread is abnormally wide.

Filters reduce trade count. That is the trade-off: fewer setups, but each one has to pass more conditions. The LOW_DD preset is deliberately stricter and trades S1 only; the HIGH_RISK preset keeps both sessions.

Stop and target placement

For a buy, the stop goes below the box low with a buffer. For a sell, it goes above the box high. The target comes from a pivot level when a valid reward-to-risk exists, otherwise from the box range. The minimum and maximum RR settings prevent both tiny targets and unrealistic targets.

This is a structural stop, not an arbitrary fixed-pip stop. If the box is wide, the stop is wider and the lot size is smaller for the same risk. If the stop is too wide, the setup is skipped.

Where the grid fits

The controlled grid adds positions only when price moves against the breakout by a defined step, while the shared invalidation level remains intact. It is not a martingale. Every position shares the same stop and target, and the total basket risk is capped.

Grid trading increases complexity and risk. If the box fails completely, all positions can lose at the shared stop. Use the LOW_DD preset first and examine the trade list before increasing exposure.

Research checklist

  • Test S1 and S2 separately; do not assume both sessions behave the same.
  • Use your broker's XAUUSD symbol and actual spread.
  • Include commission, swap and slippage.
  • Check drawdown and trade count, not just net profit.
  • Run on demo before real capital.

BBFP implements this session-box workflow as a MetaTrader 5 EA. See the BBFP Breakout Grid EA page for downloads and presets.
