Demo Trading Rules: How Long to Practice Before Real Money
Why the $100,000 Demo Is a Trap
Most brokers default you to a $100,000 virtual account. It teaches the wrong lessons:
- Size illusion: risking 1% of $100k = $1,000 trades and 1.00-lot positions. On your real $1,000 account, the same strategy needs 0.01 lots. The two behave differently — stops, spreads and psychology all scale.
- Margin illusion: a $100k demo at 100:1 never thinks about margin. A real $500 account at 30:1 does — constantly.
- Psychology illusion: demo losses don't hurt, so the discipline rules (daily caps, no revenge trading) are never actually tested.
The fix is the size-matched demo: set the demo to your planned live size, leverage and broker, then trade it like it is real money — including following every guideline in this rulebook.
The Demo-to-Live Checklist (Pass All or Don't Deposit)
| # | Condition | Why it gates live trading |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100+ journaled demo trades | Below 100 trades you cannot compute a reliable expectancy (Guideline 12) |
| 2 | Positive expectancy over those trades | Negative expectancy on demo = guaranteed loss on live |
| 3 | Written 9-part strategy (Guideline 11) | A repeatable process, not a mood |
| 4 | Covered 2+ market regimes (trend AND range) | A strategy that only worked in one regime is not proven |
| 5 | Rule-break rate under 5% of trades | If you break rules on demo, you will break them with real money |
| 6 | Executed the daily-cap shutdown at least once, without cheating | Proves the discipline mechanism actually works on you |
| 7 | Fund only what you can lose | Rental money; not savings, not borrowed, not rent |
Demo Limits: What Demo Can't Teach You
Demo is honest about the market but dishonest about execution and emotion: demo fills happen at your requested price, live fills slip; demo losses don't hurt, live losses do. The size-matched demo minimises the gap, and these three habits close it further:
- Assume every demo fill is 1 pip worse than shown, and log it that way.
- Follow the pre-trade checklist on every single demo trade — including declining trades that fail it.
- Practice the daily-cap shutdown: when the demo hits your 3% daily cap, close the platform and do not reopen it.

FAQ
How long should I trade on a demo account?
Until you pass the demo-to-live checklist — typically 2-6 months of active trading. The gate is 100+ journaled demo trades with positive expectancy, not a calendar date.
Is demo trading realistic?
Prices and spreads are realistic; fills and emotion are not. Demo fills at your requested price; live fills slip. Losses on demo don't hurt, so discipline is not truly tested. A size-matched demo with simulated slippage closes most of the gap.
What demo account size should I use?
Match your planned live deposit: $500 demo for a $500 live account, $10,000 demo for $10,000 live. Use the same leverage too. A size-matched demo makes your journal numbers transfer directly to live.
Is demo trading a waste of time?
Only if you trade a $100k demo with no plan, no journal and no checklist. Used correctly — size-matched, journaled, rules enforced — demo is the cheapest tuition in trading and the 90% rule says you need it.
