Image-grounded technical analysis

AI Chart Analysis Prompts for Forex, Crypto and Stocks

Chart screenshots can help an LLM describe structure, zones and visible patterns, but only when the prompt prevents invented prices and separates observation from interpretation. Use one to four clear charts and label every timeframe.

4 labeled chart images supported by the generator

The observation-first chart protocol

A model should pass the image-quality gate before it is allowed to interpret the setup.

Readability gate

Confirm symbol, timeframe, price axis, time axis, indicators and the current candle. Reject precise levels when labels are cropped or blurred.

Facts before patterns

Map swings, closes, wicks and zones before naming a triangle, divergence, order block, Elliott count or harmonic structure.

Open-candle control

Mark the latest candle as open, closed or unknown. Patterns that depend on an unfinished candle remain unconfirmed.

Alternative interpretation

Test a trend, range and transition explanation. A pattern label without a competing explanation is vulnerable to confirmation bias.

What chart images can and cannot establish

The prompt should become stricter as the requested conclusion becomes more quantitative.

Patterns need measurable evidence

Classical patterns require geometry, location and completion. Candlestick patterns require body and wick proportions plus prior context. Harmonic structures require swing measurements and ratio tolerances. Elliott and Wyckoff labels remain hypotheses with multiple valid counts or phases.

SMC and ICT terminology should be anchored to declared swing rules, timestamps and session context. A wick is not automatically a liquidity sweep, and a colored rectangle is not proof of institutional order flow.

  • Require the model to name the exact visible evidence.
  • Ask what would disprove the pattern.
  • Separate forming patterns from completed patterns.
  • Do not let a confidence number replace measurement.

Use data mode for quant conclusions

Screenshots are lossy representations. They cannot support a defensible Sharpe ratio, stationarity test, volatility forecast, probability estimate or risk-of-ruin calculation.

For those tasks, upload OHLC or trade data to the target model or analysis environment. Validate timestamps, gaps, spreads and adjustments first, then use code for calculations and the LLM for explanation and adversarial review.

  • Forex chart volume is usually broker tick volume, not centralized exchange volume.
  • Crypto metrics depend on the named exchange and contract.
  • Stock charts must state split and dividend adjustment.
  • Index screenshots may show a CFD rather than the cash index or futures contract.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT identify chart patterns from an image?

A vision-capable model can identify candidates, but image quality, scale and context control accuracy. Ask for observed evidence, competing labels and invalidation rather than a one-line signal.

How many chart images should I upload?

One clear chart is enough for a single-timeframe description. Use up to four labeled views for top-down analysis, ideally with a shared latest timestamp.

Are uploaded charts stored by the generator?

The generator validates temporary upload metadata such as file type and dimensions but does not move the image into permanent site storage. Reattach the image in the target LLM.
