Risk Controls

MT5 EA Risk Management

Most EA failures are risk failures, not entry failures. Define the loss before you define the target.

Risk per trade is not the same as stop distance. Lot size must be calculated from stop distance, tick value and account equity.

Hard limits every EA should have

  • Maximum risk per trade.
  • Maximum daily loss.
  • Maximum total drawdown.
  • Maximum open positions and total lots.
  • Spread and session filters.
  • Optional consecutive-loss pause.

The builder includes risk controls, but you must set them to values that match your account and broker.

Prop-firm considerations

Prop firms often enforce daily loss, maximum drawdown, consistency and news-trading rules. Test those limits in the EA before taking a challenge. See the prop-firm builder guide.

Risk Management FAQ

What is a safe risk per trade?

There is no universal number. Many traders test 0.25%–1% per trade, but it depends on strategy, drawdown tolerance and account size.

Should I use a fixed lot or % risk?

Use % risk when stop distances vary. Use fixed lots only when you understand the changing risk.

Can risk controls guarantee survival?

No. They can limit damage, but gaps, slippage and correlation risk still exist.
